Filler Pre & Post Care

Dear $(Contact.FirstName),

We are looking forward to seeing you for your upcoming visit in our Medi Spa! Our highly-trained team is looking forward to providing you with an exceptional treatment experience. In order to help you maximize your treatment results and minimize any potential unwanted side effects, we are including a list of treatment instructions to follow for before and after your treatment. Please contact our staff if you have any questions or concerns.

Pre-Treatment Instructions for Dermal Fillers:

  • Do not schedule Filler 1 month before or after any medical procedures or any vaccines (including COVID-19 vaccine).
  • Please reschedule your appointment within 24 hours if you are experiencing any of the following:
    • Infections, flu or viral illness.
    • Active inflammatory process near the area that will be injected (cysts, pimples, rashes, hives).
  • Avoid the consumption of alcoholic beverages at least 24 hours prior to treatment (alcohol may thin the blood and increase your risk of a bruise).
  • To reduce the risk of bruising, avoid anti-inflammatory/blood thinning medications for a period of 2 weeks before treatment. Medications and supplements such as aspirin, vitamin E, ginkgo biloba, ginseng, St. John’s Wort, Omega 3/Fish Oil supplements, Ibuprofen, Motrin, Advil, Aleve and other NSAID’s have a blood thinning effect and can increase the risk of bruising and swelling after injections. Do NOT stop taking prescription medication without speaking with your doctor first.
  • Schedule your appointment at least 2 weeks prior to a special event which you may be attending, such as a wedding or a vacation. Results from the treatment will take approximately 7 to 14 days to appear. It is common to experience bruising and swelling during that time period. Lip filler can take up to 4 weeks to completely settle in, and some people experience small bumps during that time.
  • Discontinue Retin-A 2 days before till 2 days after treatment.
  • Reschedule your appointment at least 24 hours in advance if you have a rash or cold sore in the treatment area.
  • If you have a history of cold sores, please let your provider know. They may put you on an anti-viral medication prior to treatment.
  • Be sure to have a good breakfast, including food and drink before your procedure. This will decrease the chances of lightheadedness during your treatment.
  • You are not a candidate if you are pregnant or breast feeding.
  • If you have a neuromuscular disorder you will need clearance from your Primary Care Physician to receive filler treatment.
  • Do not schedule filler 1 month before or after any dental work, sinus issues or infection.
  • You should not have broken skin or issues such as acne in the treatment area.
  • It is up to the discretion of the providers if you are a candidate for filler. Occasionally, you may need old filler broken down prior to new filler treatment. This is most common in the lip area.

Post-Treatment Instructions for Dermal Fillers:

  • Avoid significant movement or massage of the treated area, unless instructed by the provider. For Sculptra, massage the area for 5 minutes, five times daily for 5 days after the treatment (5/5/5). Your provider will instruct you on how to massage. This will help prevent clumping of filler under the skin.
  • Avoid makeup for 12 hours after the treatment to prevent infection. It is OK to gently wash your face as soon as 2 hours after treatment.
  • To reduce the amount of swelling and bruising:
    • Avoid strenuous exercise for 24 hours.
    • Avoid extensive sun or heat for 72 hours.
  • For lip filler, do not use any products on the lips for 12 hours. It is OK to use unopened aquafor packets or lip balm your provider gives you.
  • Avoid consuming excess amounts of alcohol or salts to avoid excess swelling.
  • If you have swelling you may apply ice to the treated area or a cool compress for 5-10 minutes each hour. For most people, swelling subsides in 24-72 hours.
  • Use Tylenol for discomfort. Avoid aspirin and ibuprofen as these can increase the risk of bruising.
  • Try to sleep face up and slightly elevated if you experience swelling.
  • Topical Arnica (Sold on Amazon and at Life-Source) can help swelling and bruising resolve more quickly. Start applying the day of your treatment and continue using 2x daily.
  • Please call the office immediately if you experience any of the following:
    • Severe pain at the injection site or elsewhere in the face.
    • Severe swelling
    • Fever or any other sign of infection
    • Changes in vision
    • Discoloration of the skin other than bruising such as blanching or blackening of the skin around the injected area or a rash-like appearance
  • It takes 2-3 weeks for final results. Duration of results depends on type of filler, placement and individual metabolism and how expressive your face. 6-18 months is typical.
