Paramedical Tattooing

If you are a cancer survivor interested in nipple and areola repigmentation, paramedical tattooing may be a good solution. At Renew & Rejuvenate Aesthetic MD Clinics, we offer paramedical tattooing to help restore the appearance of the areola after mastectomy or breast reconstruction surgery. Our office in Savannah provides this service to residents of Palm Valley, Jacksonville Beach, Jacksonville and the surrounding areas of Florida.

What is Paramedical Tattooing?

Paramedical tattooing, also known as corrective or reconstructive tattooing, is a technique that deposits pigment into the skin similar to permanent makeup. However, it is used for medical and reconstructive purposes, not just cosmetic enhancement. Paramedical tattooing restores the appearance of nipples and areolas for breast cancer survivors who have undergone mastectomy and breast reconstruction by matching the skin tone. It can also be used to camouflage scars, stretch marks and other skin conditions.

What Can Paramedical Tattooing Be Used For?

Paramedical tattooing is most commonly used for women who have had a nipple-sparing mastectomy, nipple reconstruction, or had a 3D tattoo nipple created during breast reconstruction. The areola and nipple area must be fully healed before tattooing, which takes several months after surgery. We can also use these techniques for cosmetic purposes, such as the general size or color correction of areolas. Other services include:

  • 3D cosmetic areolas
  • Mastectomy survivor 3D areolas
  • Areola cosmetic color correction
  • Scar or stretch mark camouflage
  • Vitiligo camouflage
  • HairlIne or scalp recreation
  • Scalp pigmentation
  • Cleft lip camouflage

If you are interested in other cosmetic applications of permanent makeup, you may want to consider micropigmentation.

What is the Paramedical Tattooing Treatment Like?

Our experienced technician will match the pigment color to your natural skin tone, and when necessary, the breast areola, using custom blended pigments. They use advanced techniques to deposit pigments and create depth and dimension for a realistic result. The process takes 1-2 hours and involves some mild discomfort, though a topical anesthetic is applied to numb the area.

Is There Any Downtime After Paramedical Tattooing?

There is minimal downtime after paramedical tattooing. You may experience some mild swelling, redness, and tenderness for the first 24-48 hours after the procedure. The area will be darker and more sharply defined before softening to a natural appearance over the following few weeks. You can resume most normal activities immediately, though you'll need to avoid submerging the tattooed area in water like baths or swimming for 7-10 days. Avoid sun exposure, saunas, and picking/scratching the tattooed skin. The skin should be kept clean and dry while healing.

How Long Do Paramedical Tattooing Results Last?

Results from paramedical tattooing generally last 1-3 years before beginning to fade. However, results vary based on the individual's skin type and lifestyle. The pigment fades more quickly for those with very oily skin. Sun exposure can also cause faster fading. To maintain results, many people get touch up appointments every 1-2 years.
